Mookaite Jasper is often considered the most popular jasper on the market because of its breathtaking colors and patterning.
Mookaite was first discovered by a pair of brothers who, after years of mining and making just enough to get by, discovered a vein of this stunning stone along the Mooka Creek in Australia.
The brothers purchased the claim for the land and became the world’s exclusive providers of the stone for many years.
Mookaite can be described as chert, opalite, chalcedony or combinations of the three. The degree of silica in the material determines its description. Either way, the colors in these stones will grab your attention and won’t let go!
The name Jasper means "Spotted or speckled stone" and is derived from the Old French term jaspre. Jasper is known to have been a favorite gem in the ancient world; its name can be traced back in Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Assyrian, Greek and Latin. On Minoan Crete, jasper was carved to produce seals circa 1800 BC, as evidenced by archaeological recoveries at the palace of Knossos.
