What is Maligano Jasper?

Maligano Jasper is a fairly recently discovered Brecciated Jasper variety that was found in Indonesia in 2011. 

This gemstone contains several color shades from the Jasper family (blue, red, orange, yellow, grey and beige) with veins of a silver Agate that provides the color and material that fills the cavities between the Jasper layers.

Maligano Jasper is only found among the islands of Sulawesi in Indonesia and is mined by hand, as the village does not have the heavy machinery required for deeper excavation. As such, this material is more difficult to find and often comes with a higher price tag.

The amazing natural abstract pattern found in these stones gives it a shattered look, where the different colors of Jasper interact with one another and seem to dance around the scenery of the stone. The natural beiges act as sort of an intermediary between all of the other dominating colors.

Where is Maligano Jasper from?

Maligano Jasper gets its name from the small village in which it was discovered in 2011 — and the only place it is known to exist. 

The islands of the Sulawesi Province in Indonesia contain the Muna Regency that covers parts of the island of Muna. Within the Muna Regency are six small villages that make up the Maligano district.

These islands are also home to a lowlands rainforest that is home to some of the most exotic animals on earth.

As of 2017, Maligano has an estimated population of 5,108 people that inhabit 60 square miles of land.

This area is small and secluded and does not feature heavily mined lands like you would see in other areas of Indonesia and Asia. Because of this, these villages do not own the heavy mining equipment used in neighboring lands.

Without that equipment, Maligano Jasper is mined in small batches by hand by area miners. The final product material is carefully removed from the earth and brought to market for many different uses — including ornamental, jewelry making and tumbled stones.

Maligano Jasper has a hardness that rates as a 7 on the Mohs scale, which means that it can be carved, cut and handmade into just about any shape or size that nature allows. The mineral content in Maligano Jasper makes this gem a tough material with great mottled colors.
