Herkimer Diamonds are one of the most popular stones on the market over the last 10 years.
These quartz stones rose to prominence because of their affordability and resemblance to traditional diamonds.
Herkimer Diamonds originate from a series of mines in Herkimer County, New York. While there are several stones with similar Quartz compositions from other places in the world, true Herkimers only come from one New York county.
For example, Pakistani Diamonds have been dubbed “Pakimers” because of their resemblance to Herkimers.
The tumbled Herkimer Diamonds in this listing were sourced directly from the Ace of Diamonds Mine in Herkimer County. The tumbled specimens originated as chipped or cracked diamonds that weren’t suitable for display pieces or jewelry.
Instead of letting them go to waste, we’ve given them a new life as tumbled carry pieces.
Just like raw Herkimer Diamonds, each tumbled Herkimer has various colors and inclusions.
Typically, you’ll find gold or black inclusions in many Herkimer Diamonds. The black (Which we’ve dubbed “Black Diamonds” contain carbon inclusions. While this is very likely coal or graphite, there’s no way to tell for certain unless you open the specimen and test the material inside (please don’t!)
Gold can vary from iron inclusions to petroleum inclusions. Petroleum typical means oil, but it can’t be for sure unless you test it (again, please be nice to the rocks and don’t break them open!)
fox&toad is one of very few retailers that offers genuine tumbled Herkimer Diamonds. Please contact us if you’re looking for raw specimens from the Ace of Diamonds Mine. We have lots!
