Desert Jasper — also regularly referred to as Polychrome Jasper — gets its name from the abundance of colors often found in each stone.
This is one of the newest varieties of Jasper, having popped up in and around Madagascar in the last century.
The bright, vibrant and earthy colors make this a great fire element stone that increases energy and grounds one to the earth.
Polychrome Jasper is also a highly protective material that is capable of deflecting negative energies and clearing blocked energy channels. This variety of jasper also specializes in grounding and provides balance and stability.
The name Jasper means "Spotted or speckled stone" and is derived from the Old French term jaspre. Jasper is known to have been a favorite gem in the ancient world; its name can be traced back in Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Assyrian, Greek and Latin. On Minoan Crete, jasper was carved to produce seals circa 1800 BC, as evidenced by archaeological recoveries at the palace of Knossos.
