Jasper, Tiger Tumbled Stones

Tiger Jasper is also known as Tiger Iron. Although this popular stone is often grouped in the Jasper family, it is only partially composed of a true Jasper.

Tiger Jasper tumbled stones contain layers of shimmering Golden Tiger’s Eye, metallic grey Hematite and deep Red Jasper. These three contrasting colors combine to create a beautiful stone that is as striking as it is weighty.

This beautiful stone was formed by Iron-bearing Quartz — Tiger Eye and Jasper — replacing the mineral Crocidolite.

Both Tiger Iron and Tiger Jasper are also sometimes referred to as Mugglestone. Our Mugglestone tumbled stones tend to have a heavier percentage of Red Jasper than the traditional Tiger Eye or Tiger Jasper.

And although the name Mugglestone might excite some Harry Potter fans, it is thought that the name actually derived from "mucklestone," found in a place named "Moclestone" in what is now Great Britain.

Aside from Moclestone, Tiger Jasper is also found in deposits throughout Australia, Brazil, Mexico, in the Lake Superior area of the United States. The Tiger Jasper tumbled stones in this listing originate from Australia.

The ironstone in Tiger Jasper makes it an incredibly strong stone and one that is popular with jewelry makers — especially for use in various pendant, chain, ring, bead necklace and earring designs. The weight of Tiger Jasper — which comes from the Hematite and Ironstone makes it very sturdy as well.

What Healing Properties Does Tiger Jasper Have?

Since Tiger Jasper combines three mineral energies in one stone, you can expect to have a wide range of Metaphysical Properties at your disposal.

Tiger Jasper activated the Root, Sacral and Solar Plexus Chakras. Each Chakra works together to keep your thoughts and actions grounded to the earth and your mind clear and free of negative energy.

These healing stones promote strength and balance — as is evident in how the variety of natural materials converge upon one stone without one dominating the other.

With a clear mind, you can focus on expanding your positive energy to increase your stamina, vitality and energy and decrease emotional stress and anxiety. This is especially true when you use Tiger Jasper in meditation to create balance, strength and clarity of thoughts.

Tiger Jasper reduces the feelings that force you to procrastinate. This can give you the courage to take on new ideas, goals and projects that you may otherwise never explore or complete. This can bring about more self confidence and strength to get things done.

This is a strong grounding and protection stone. It helps to provide strength, vitality, confidence, willpower and balance. Practitioners use tiger iron to strengthen their energy field by attuning to the electromagnetic field of the earth.

Do not take this stone’s name for granted. It can truly give you the Eye of the Tiger (sorry, Survivor fans).

What is the Difference Between Tiger Eye and Tiger Jasper?

Although their names sound very similar, you can easily tell the difference between Tiger Jasper and Tiger’s Eye. The mineral content is also very different between the two.

Tiger Jasper is a metamorphic rock which is formed by the tectonic activities of the earth and is a combination of Silica Quartz and Iron.

Tiger's Eye is also metamorphic, but this material has a silky luster from the parallel intergrowth of Quartz crystals and altered Amphibole fibers that have mostly turned into Limonite. Tiger’s eye’s sheen and shape comes from this layering, where light refracts off each microscopic layer to create a chatoyance in bands.

While Tiger Jasper tends to have one one appearance, Tiger’s Eye is found in natural shades of Gold, Blue, Red and a Blue/Gold mixture known as Hawkeye.

What is Tiger Jasper Made Of?

Tiger Jasper is a fairly even combination of Hematite, Iron and Red Jasper.

This metamorphic rock formed more than 2 billion years ago, when deposits of these three materials slowly mashed together as the earth’s tectonic plates shifted.

The tremendous pressures this mish-mash crystal experienced resulted in the stones intricate, banded designs. Each stone features distinctly different layers and patterns of gold, silver, brown and red.

The name Jasper means "Spotted or speckled stone" and is derived from the Old French term jaspre. Jasper is known to have been a favorite gem in the ancient world; its name can be traced back in Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Assyrian, Greek and Latin. On Minoan Crete, jasper was carved to produce seals circa 1800 BC, as evidenced by archaeological recoveries at the palace of Knossos.

Where Does Tiger Jasper Come From?

Almost all of the world’s Tiger Jasper originates from Australia — specifically the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Tiger Jasper is mined from an Archaean formation in the Ord Ranges, near Port Hedland in Western Australia. This area’s rich iron ore is popular in the steel industry.

While Tiger Jasper took many millennia to form, this gem only recently became known on the market.

Can Tiger Jasper Get Wet?

Raw Tiger Jasper should not be exposed to water for long periods of time. That is because both the iron and Hematite inclusions in this material do not interact well with water. You should not ingest any water that your Tiger Jasper has soaked in.

Tiger Jasper tumbled stones, on the other hand, are finished with a polish that makes them a little more durable underwater. That said, Tiger Jasper is not an aquarium safe stone and it could start to change color if you soak it in water for too long.

Short exposure to water, to clean or cleanse the stone, is perfectly acceptable. Although Tiger Jasper is a strong stone, the natural layering of Iron, Hematite and Jasper means that there are weaknesses in each specimen or tumbled stone.

You should avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners with Tiger Jasper. The addition of other gemstone inclusions can make this stone sensitive to household cleaners. Use warm soapy water and a soft cotton cloth in short bursts to wipe down your Tiger Jasper. Be sure to remove any traces of water, body oils or perspiration when you are done.
